The new Active Redirection Transit Time (ARTT) Flowmeter module introduces
several major improvements in the accurate measurement of volume blood flow. The
module, which operates on ultrasonic transit-time principles, utilizes a patented technique
of biased insonication and active redirection of ultrasound to measure cardiac output in
experimental animals. Furthermore, the use of biased insonication compensates for
adipose tissue intrusion between the probe and vessel during the course of chronic
implantation.

Most important in this advancement is the development of Triton's "X probe." The new
probe, which works exclusively with the ARTT Flowmeter module, was developed to
correct the difficulties of size, weight and signal strength commonly found with existing
probe designs. Active Redirection permits an ultrasonic signal to be transmitted in the
shape of an "X" path across a vessel when measuring blood flow. It is this extended
transmission path which provides better resolution with a shorter, more compact probe
then previously possible. In comparison, existing probes, which use single path or
reflecting double path designs, have not been able to achieve this degree of compactness
and ease of implantation. Further reduction in probe mass is achieved through the use of
micromachined Ultem probe bodies. This material is extremely strong and lightweight,
and complies with US Pharmacopeia Class VI biocompatibility requirements .

A growing family of probe sizes is available to fit most commonly instrumented blood
vessels. The probes provide a snug fit, insuring excellent sound coupling in both acute and
chronic preparations. Moreover, the smooth precision machined surfaces of the cuff
eliminate the risk of vessel erosion in long-term chronic preparations. Specialized in-line
transducers are available for monitoring fluid flow in extracorporeal perfusion lines.

Calibration for both the implantable and extracorporeal transducers is achieved by
precision delay lines and digital look-up tables in the Model 300-206 internal circuitry. The ARTT flowmeter
automatically detects the type and size of probe attached to itself digital and generates a series of voltages directly
proportional to blood flow displayed on its large LCD panel.
